Bank/Branch Number
New Zealand bank accounts use a 2-digit bank number and 4-digit branch number to identify the institution and branch. Together with the 7-digit account number and 2–3 digit suffix, they form the full NZ bank account number used for domestic transfers.

How BB works
The 2-digit bank number identifies the bank (e.g. 06 = ASB, 01 = ANZ), and the 4-digit branch number identifies the specific branch. All domestic transfers require the full bank account number in the format BB-bbbb-AAAAAAA-SSS.
