Hong Kong banks are identified by a 3-digit bank code assigned by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Used alongside a 3-digit branch code and account number for domestic CHATS and FPS transfers.

How BC works
The 3-digit bank code identifies the institution (e.g. 004 = HSBC, 012 = Bank of China HK). Branch codes are separate and vary by bank. Both are needed for CHATS (interbank clearing) transfers.
