Bankleitzahl

The Bankleitzahl (BLZ) is an 8-digit code identifying German banks and their branches. While largely replaced by IBAN for transfers, BLZ numbers are still embedded within German IBANs and used for internal bank identification.

How BLZ works

The first digit indicates the clearing area (corresponding to German states), digits 2–3 identify the location, and digits 4–8 identify the specific bank. The Bundesbank maintains the official directory.

Where to find yours

Embedded in your IBAN (digits 5–12), on bank statements, or via the Bundesbank's online BLZ directory.

Good to know

You almost never need to use a BLZ directly — it is embedded in your IBAN.

German IBANs are 22 characters: DE + 2 check digits + 8-digit BLZ + 10-digit account number.

SEPA transfers use IBAN only — no BLZ or SWIFT code required for eurozone payments.
