How to Create Virtual Cards with Slash
Overview
Virtual cards are digital payment cards that exist only in your Slash account. They work anywhere Visa is accepted online, and they can be created instantly. Virtual cards are ideal for managing subscriptions, vendor payments, employee expenses, or separating spend by project or department.
Slash allows you to create unlimited virtual cards, each with its own customizable spending controls.
How to Create a Virtual Card
Step 1: Navigate to Cards
From your Slash dashboard, select Cards in the left sidebar.
Step 2: Create a New Card
Click Create Card in the top right corner, then select Virtual Card.
Step 3: Configure Card Details
Fill in the following information:
- Card name: A descriptive name to help you identify this card (e.g., "Marketing Subscriptions" or "AWS Payments")
- Subaccount: Select which subaccount the card should draw funds from
- Cardholder: Assign the card to yourself or a team member
Step 4: Set Spending Controls (Optional)
You can configure limits and restrictions to control how the card is used:
- Spending limits: Set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or total (one-time) limits
- Transaction size: Set minimum or maximum amounts per transaction
- Merchant categories: Allow or block specific merchant types (e.g., Travel, Dining)
- Specific merchants: Allow or block individual merchants by name
- Countries: Restrict where the card can be used geographically
Step 5: Review and Create
Review your card settings and click Create Card. Your virtual card will be available immediately.
How to View and Use Your Virtual Card
Once created, click on the card from your Cards list to view the full card number, expiration date, and CVV. You can copy these details to use for online purchases or add the card to a digital wallet.
Additional Features and Considerations
- Single-use cards: For one-time purchases, you can create a single-use virtual card that automatically closes after the first transaction
- Card groups: Organize multiple cards into groups with shared spending limits
- Pause and resume: Temporarily disable a card without deleting it
- Instant notifications: Receive real-time alerts when the card is used
