How to Set Up Card Groups
Last updated April 9, 2026
Overview
Card groups let you set and manage spending limits across multiple cards at once, rather than configuring limits on each card individually. Instead of setting rules on every card, you create a group, define the rules once, and every card in that group follows them automatically.
This is especially useful when you want to control aggregate spending across a set of cards — for example, capping total ad spend across 10 cards at $10,000, or setting a travel budget that applies to all employee cards combined.
You can view all of your card groups by navigating to the Cards page and clicking the Groups tab.
How to Create a Card Group
Step 1: Navigate to Card Groups
From your Slash dashboard, click Cards in the left sidebar. You can locate your card groups by navigating to Groups.

Step 2: Start a New Group
Click Add + in the top right corner, then select New Group.

Step 3: Configure Group Details
Give your group a descriptive name that reflects its purpose (e.g., "Facebook Ad Spend," "Employee Travel," or "Q1 Inventory Budget"). Clear names make it easier to manage your cards as you create more groups. Choose the account from which cards will be paid, and then select the cards you'd like to include in the group.

Step 4: Configure Limits
When setting rules for a card group, you’ll see options labeled Blocked and Allowed. These control whether you’re creating a restriction list or an allowlist:
- Blocked = Everything is allowed except what you specify
- Allowed = Everything is blocked except what you specify
Here's what rules and limits you can set for your group:
- Transaction size limit: Set minimum and/or maximum amounts per transaction.
- Utilization limit: Cap total spending across all cards in the group over a defined period.
- Merchant categories: Allow or block transactions based on broad spending categories.
- MCCs (Merchant Category Codes): Allow or block transactions using more specific merchant classification codes.
- Merchants: Allow or block transactions with specific merchants.
- Allowed countries: Control which countries the card can be used in.

Step 5: Create the Group
Click Create Card Group. Your group is now ready for cards to be assigned to it. You can edit any of these settings later.
How to Modify a Card Group
Step 1: Navigate to Card Groups
From the sidebar, click Cards, then select the Groups tab.
Step 2: Select a Group
Click on the card group you want to edit, then click Edit group limits.
Step 3: Update Limits and Save
Change any of the limits in the side panel and click Save group limits to apply your changes immediately.
