Enabling Two-Factor Authentication
Overview
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your Slash account by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password. When 2FA is enabled, you'll need to enter a time-sensitive code from an authenticator app each time you log in.
Enabling 2FA is one of the most effective ways to protect your account from unauthorized access—even if someone obtains your password, they won't be able to log in without access to your authenticator app.
Before You Begin
You'll need an authenticator app installed on your mobile device. Slash supports any TOTP-compatible authenticator app, including:
- Google Authenticator
- Authy
- 1Password
- Microsoft Authenticator
If you don't already have an authenticator app, download one from your device's app store before proceeding.
How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Step 1: Navigate to Security Settings
Log into your Slash account and click on your profile icon in the top-right corner. Select 'Settings' from the dropdown menu, then navigate to the 'Security' tab.
Step 2: Select 'Enable Two-Factor Authentication'
In the Security settings, locate the Two-Factor Authentication section and click the 'Enable' button to begin the setup process.
Step 3: Scan the QR Code
Slash will display a QR code on your screen. Open your authenticator app and scan this code to link your Slash account. If you're unable to scan the QR code, click 'Enter code manually' to view a text-based setup key you can type into your authenticator app.
Step 4: Enter the Verification Code
Your authenticator app will now display a 6-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. Enter this code in the verification field to confirm the link between your Slash account and your authenticator app.
Step 5: Save Your Backup Codes
Slash will provide a set of one-time backup codes. Save these codes in a secure location—you can use them to access your account if you lose access to your authenticator app. Each backup code can only be used once.
Step 6: Confirm and Complete Setup
Click 'Complete Setup' to finish enabling 2FA. From now on, you'll be prompted to enter a code from your authenticator app each time you log in.
Additional Features and Considerations
Logging In with 2FA
After entering your email and password, you'll see a prompt to enter your 6-digit authentication code. Open your authenticator app, find the code for Slash, and enter it before it expires. Codes refresh every 30 seconds.
Using Backup Codes
If you lose access to your authenticator app, you can use one of your backup codes to log in. Each code works only once, so generate new backup codes after using one. To generate new backup codes, return to Security Settings after logging in.
Disabling 2FA
To disable two-factor authentication, navigate to Settings > Security and click 'Disable' in the Two-Factor Authentication section. You'll need to enter a verification code from your authenticator app to confirm this change.
Need More Help?
- Lost access to your authenticator app: Use one of your saved backup codes to log in, then reconfigure 2FA with your new device or app.
- Lost your backup codes too: Contact Slash support through the login page. You'll need to verify your identity before support can help you regain access.
- Code not working: Make sure your device's clock is set to automatic. Authenticator codes are time-sensitive and may fail if your device clock is out of sync.
