Common causes for Shopify charges

10 common reasons why you may be seeing a Shopify on your statement:

  • Platform subscription renewal
Shopify plans renew automatically (monthly or annually). Merchants often see these charges after trial stores convert or when a paused store is reactivated.
  • App subscriptions and add-ons
Most third-party apps and integrations purchased through the Shopify App Store bill directly through Shopify Billing. These can accumulate if multiple stores or users share the same card.
  • Domain and email renewals
If you registered a custom domain or email service through Shopify, annual renewals are billed automatically. Even if the store is no longer active, the domain must be canceled to ensure you're not charged.
  • Payment processing fees
Shopify Payments deducts card processing and currency conversion fees separately from subscription billing. These appear as small periodic withdrawals or grouped monthly charges.
  • Shipping label purchases
Labels purchased through Shopify Shipping generate small, individual charges per label, often several in a single day for active stores.
  • Shopify Capital repayments
If you received Shopify Capital funding, repayments are withdrawn automatically as a percentage of daily sales until the balance is repaid.
  • Point of Sale (POS) or retail subscriptions
Merchants using in-person POS systems pay separate software subscription or hardware plan fees through Shopify Billing.
  • Shopify Plus or enterprise services
Large-scale businesses using Shopify Plus are billed monthly or annually through dedicated enterprise invoices — often higher amounts from Toronto, ON.
  • Partner or developer services
Charges can occur from Shopify Partner accounts, theme purchases, or developer tool usage.
  • Multiple stores or test accounts
Many merchants forget about old or trial stores that automatically renew after the trial period expires, resulting in unexpected recurring charges.

Decoding Shopify charge tags

  • SHOPIFY / SHOPIFY* identifies the transaction as a billing charge from Shopify itself rather than customer purchases made through your store.
  • BILLING / SUBSCRIPTION / RENEWAL usually indicates a recurring platform fee for your Shopify plan, Shopify Plus contract, or an automatically renewed trial store.
  • APP CHARGE / MARKETPLACE APP appears when a third-party app or integration bills you through the Shopify App Store. Even if the tool was created by another developer, Shopify processes the payment directly.
  • DOMAIN / EMAIL refers to annual renewals for custom domains or hosted email accounts purchased through Shopify. These renew automatically unless canceled before the expiration date.
  • SHOPIFY PAYMENTS FEES / TRANSACTION FEES mark the processing fees deducted from sales through Shopify Payments. These typically appear as small periodic debits or grouped adjustments.
  • SHIPPING / COLLECTION identifies shipping label purchases or carrier surcharges generated through Shopify Shipping. Each label is billed individually as it’s created.
  • CAPITAL refers to automated daily repayments for Shopify Capital financing. A percentage of your daily sales is withdrawn until the funding amount is repaid.
  • PLUS / POINT OF SALE / POS SUBSCRIPTION indicates charges for Shopify Plus enterprise services or for the POS retail system used in brick-and-mortar locations.
  • BILLING TORONTO ON / INTERNET SOFTWARE CA reveals that the charge was processed through Shopify’s Canadian billing entity, located in Ontario. This is normal for international Shopify accounts.
  • PARTNER relates to Shopify’s Partner or developer ecosystem, which covers billing for themes, development stores, or paid partner tools linked to your account.
