The R76 return code can be returned on consumer and non-consumer accounts. An ACH R76 return code indicates that a dishonored return was sent in error because no valid error exists in the original return entry. In other words, the original return complies with the NACHA Operating Rules and cannot be dishonored.
This return code is used in the ACH return and dishonored return process rather than for the original ACH transaction. The Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) must transmit an R76 entry within 2 banking days of settlement of the dishonored return.

What is an ACH Return Code?
An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.
Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.
Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R76
determined there were no errors with the original return entry. This return code is used to respond to an earlier challenge from the RDFI, confirming that the original return was accurate and properly formatted. This may have occurred because:
- The RDFI contested the return but the ODFI found no issues. After investigation, the originating bank confirmed that all return data, codes, and formatting were correct.
- The original return complied with all Nacha requirements. Review of the return entry showed it met all ACH Network rules and standards, leaving no basis for the RDFI's challenge.
- The ODFI has documentation supporting the return's accuracy. Records and audit trails demonstrate that the original return was properly created and transmitted without errors.
