Managing Bills in Your Payables Dashboard
Last updated October 30, 2026
Overview
Slash has two views for managing bills: one under Payables and one under Accounting. The Payables bill manager gives you the most control over tracking a bill’s status, editing its details, and paying it.
This guide covers:
- Adding bills to Slash
- Tracking a bill’s status
- Using filters and quick actions
- Editing, managing, and paying a bill
For details on payments, see How to Pay Bills with Slash. To manage bills from your accounting dashboard, see Adding Bills to Your Accounting Dashboard.
How to add a bill to Slash
There are three ways to create a bill entry in Slash. Click New bill in the top right of the Bills dashboard and select an option from the dropdown menu:
- Forward the bill to your AP inbox: Each Slash account has a dedicated accounts payable forwarding address, listed in the New bill dropdown menu. Forward the email containing the bill to that address, and the bill entry appears in your dashboard automatically.
- Upload an invoice: Drag and drop an invoice (.pdf, .jpg, .jpeg, or .png) into the New bill dropdown menu. Slash extracts the bill details from the document automatically, and you can add more information in the bill creation panel before finalizing the entry.
- Create the bill without an invoice: If you don’t have a digital file to upload, enter the details manually in the bill creation panel.
Navigating the Payables dashbaord
When you upload a bill, Slash pulls as much information as possible from the document, including the vendor, payer, amount, due date, invoice date, and invoice number. Key details from the bill are viewable from the Bills page:
Status
Bill statuses update automatically based on activity in your Slash account:
- Draft: The bill was recently added to Slash. Its details are still editable, and it can be deleted.
- Pending approval: The bill was finalized and a payment was initiated, but a designated approver still needs to release the payment.
- Scheduled: The payment has been initiated and approved but is scheduled for a future date, so it hasn’t been released yet.
- Partially paid: The amount paid is less than the invoice total.
- Paid: The invoice has been paid in full.
- Payment failed: The payment was initiated and approved but failed in transit. Retry the payment from the bill.
Overdue isn’t a status. Instead, the Due date column flags overdue bills: if a bill is on time, its due date appears in grey. If it’s overdue, the date turns white and the number of days overdue appears in red underneath it.
Filters and search
To view only bills with a certain status, vendor, due date, or other attribute, use the filters in the top left. You can also find specific bills with the search bar, which matches on the vendor.
Quick actions
On the right side of each row, you can take quick actions depending on the bill’s status:
- Continue to payment: A play button available for drafts and unpaid bills. Clicking it takes you straight to the payment flow.
- Delete: A red trash can icon that lets you delete draft and pending bills. You can’t delete bills that are scheduled, paid, or have had a payment attempted.
- View attachment: If the bill has an invoice or receipt attached, hover over the paperclip icon to preview it.
Editing, managing, and paying a bill
To manage a bill, click anywhere on its row. A pop-up opens showing the bill’s details, supporting documents, and related payments.
If you’re adding a bill after already sending payment for the invoice, you can link that existing transaction to the bill. On the right side of the pop-up, switch to the Related payments panel, which lists sent, scheduled, and requested payments. Select the payment and click link to add it to the bill record.
For a full walkthrough of paying bills, including how to select a payment method for your recipient and schedule a payment for a future date, see [Paying bills with Slash].
