ACH Return Code R32: RDFI Non-Settlement

RDFI Non-Settlement

The R32 return code can be returned on consumer and non-consumer accounts. An ACH R32 return code indicates that the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) is not able to settle the ACH transaction because it is in a non-settlement status, such as when the institution has suspended ACH settlement activities.

This return code is not restricted to a particular SEC code or account type. The ACH Operator must return an R32 entry when settlement cannot be completed due to the RDFI's non-settlement status.

What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R32

Code R32 means the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) was unable to settle the ACH entry. Settlement is the process by which funds are exchanged between financial institutions, and this return may have occurred because:

  • The RDFI could not complete settlement with the ACH Operator. A processing, funding, or operational issue prevented the bank from settling the transaction.
  • Settlement was blocked due to a bank-level issue. This can occur due to liquidity issues, system outages, or other internal bank constraints.

How to resolve this return code

Follow these steps to address and prevent this ACH return.

1

Do not immediately retry.

Because this return is related to bank settlement rather than account details, retrying immediately will not resolve the issue.

2

Contact your payment provider or bank.

Determine whether and when the RDFI is able to settle transactions again.

3

Resubmit once settlement is restored.

Once settlement capability is restored and confirmed, the transaction may be resubmitted.
