How to refund a payment
Last updated September 18, 2026
You can refund all or part of a succeeded card payment. Refunds are sent back through the original payment method and are always issued in the payment's currency.
Before you issue a refund
Confirm that:
- The original payment succeeded
- The amount is greater than zero
- The amount does not exceed the remaining refundable balance
- You selected the correct payment and customer
A refund generally cannot be canceled after it has been submitted. Review the details carefully before confirming.
Issue a refund in the dashboard
- Find the payment transaction in the Payments tab.
- Open the transaction and select Refund transaction.
- Enter the amount to refund. This can be a full or partial refund.
- Select Confirm Refund.
You can issue multiple partial refunds, but their combined value cannot exceed the original payment amount.
Issue a refund with the API
Create the refund from your server with the Payment Intent ID and refund amount in the currency's smallest unit.
Use an idempotency key. If a request times out, retrying the same request with the same key returns the original refund instead of creating another one.
Never create refunds from browser code or expose your API key.
When will the customer receive the money?
A succeeded refund means the processor completed the refund. The customer's bank controls when the credit appears on their account or statement.
Ask the customer to check the original payment method and contact their bank if the credit does not appear after the expected bank-processing period.
Why can’t I issue a refund?
A refund may fail because:
- The payment has not succeeded
- The refund exceeds the remaining refundable amount
- The amount is invalid
- Another refund is already in progress
- The processing account does not have sufficient funds, if required
- The processor could not complete the request
Check the current payment and refund statuses before trying again. After an unknown API or network error, retrieve the refund or payment from your server first to avoid duplicates.
