How to Close a Virtual Account
Last updated April 9, 2026
Overview
Virtual accounts let you create dedicated bank account numbers for different purposes, like tracking funds from specific clients or projects. When you no longer need a virtual account, you can close it from your Slash dashboard.
When you close a virtual account, Slash automatically handles the cleanup for you — there are no prerequisites you need to complete first. The system will close associated cards, cancel pending outgoing transfers, and move remaining funds to your primary account.
How to Close a Virtual Account
Step 1: Navigate to the Virtual Account
From your main dashboard, click on the virtual account you want to close. You can find your virtual accounts listed in the accounts section of your sidebar.
Step 2: Open the Account Menu
Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top right corner of the virtual account page.
Step 3: Select "Close virtual account"
Choose "Close virtual account" from the menu. A confirmation prompt will appear explaining what will happen when the account is closed.
Step 4: Confirm Closure
Review the details, then click "Close Virtual Account" to confirm. This action is permanent.
What Happens When You Close a Virtual Account
When you close a virtual account, Slash automatically takes the following actions:
- Remaining funds are moved to your primary account: Any balance in the virtual account is automatically transferred back to your primary account. You do not need to manually transfer funds before closing.
- Pending outgoing transfers are canceled: Any pending outgoing transfers from the virtual account will be automatically canceled.
- All associated cards are closed: Cards linked to the virtual account are permanently closed. They cannot be reactivated — if you need new cards, you'll need to create them on another account.
- Incoming transfers are returned to sender: Any future ACH, wire, or real-time transfers sent to the closed account's bank account number will be automatically returned to the sender.
- The account is hidden from your dashboard: Closed virtual accounts are no longer displayed in your account list by default. Your transaction history for the account is still preserved and remains accessible through your statements.
Can I Reopen a Closed Virtual Account?
No. Once a virtual account is closed, it cannot be reopened. If you need similar functionality, you'll need to create a new virtual account, which will have a new bank account number.
