ACH Return Code R35: Return of Improper Debit Entry

Return of Improper Debit Entry

The R35 return code can be returned on consumer and non-consumer accounts. An ACH R35 return code indicates that a debit entry is being returned because it was improperly initiated or does not comply with the NACHA Operating Rules. This return code is used when a return entry itself is improper, such as when an unauthorized or otherwise invalid debit was transmitted in error.

This return code is not restricted to a particular SEC code or account type. The Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) must return an R35 entry within 2 banking days of settlement.

What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R35

Code R35 means the ACH debit entry was not permitted for the type of account or transaction involved. This return may have occurred because:

  • Debit entries are not allowed for the SEC code used. Certain Standard Entry Class (SEC) codes, such as CIE, do not permit debit transactions.
  • The debit was sent to an account that does not accept ACH debits. ACH debits can only be sent to transaction-enabled checking or savings accounts. Loan, credit card, escrow, and other restricted accounts generally cannot be debited through the ACH Network.
