Payment Troubleshooting: Why Did My Payment Fail?
Last updated October 1, 2026
Overview
Payments can fail or get returned for several reasons: incorrect recipient details, insufficient funds, network limits, unsupported payment methods, bank rejections, approval requirements, or compliance review. The fastest way to resolve a failed payment is to check the payment status, confirm the payment rail, and review the details Slash shows in your dashboard.
What to check first
Before you resend a payment, open the payment or transaction details in Slash and check:
- Payment status, such as failed, returned, rejected, pending approval, canceled, or under review
- Payment method, such as ACH, wire, RTP/FedNow, international wire, global ACH, or crypto
- Recipient name, account number, routing number, SWIFT/BIC, wallet address, or other destination details
- Funding account and available balance
- Transfer amount, fees, limits, and timing
- Any in-app message, return code, or notification from Slash
Common reasons payments fail
Insufficient funds
A payment can fail if the funding account doesn’t have enough available balance to cover the payment amount and any applicable fees. Check the source account, pending outgoing payments, card settlements, and scheduled transfers before trying again.
Incorrect recipient details
Incorrect account numbers, routing numbers, SWIFT codes, wallet addresses, recipient names, or addresses can cause a payment to fail or be returned. Verify the details directly with the recipient using a trusted channel before you resend the payment.
Unsupported payment method
Not every payment method works for every recipient. For example, real-time payments require the receiving bank to participate in RTP or FedNow, some destinations can’t receive ACH, and some international recipients may require wire details instead of local clearing details.
Transfer limits
Payments may be blocked or rejected if they exceed your account’s transaction limits, the payment network’s limits, or the receiving institution’s limits. If you need to send a larger payment, you may need to split it, choose another payment method, or contact support.
Approval requirements
Some payments need approval before they can be sent. If a payment is pending approval, it hasn’t failed yet — it’s waiting for the required approver to review it. Check your Action Center or payment details to see who needs to approve the request.
Compliance or risk review
Banks and payment providers may review payments for fraud, compliance, sanctions, or other risk checks. A review can delay a payment, and in some cases the payment may be rejected or returned. If Slash needs more information, you’ll usually see an in-app request or notification.
Cutoff times, holidays, or network availability
Some payment rails process only during business hours or on banking days. A payment that looks delayed may simply be waiting for the next processing window. ACH uses batch processing, wires follow banking cutoff times, and international payments can be affected by local holidays or intermediary banks.
ACH payment failures and returns
ACH payments can fail before they’re sent or be returned after they’ve entered the ACH network. Returns can happen because of incorrect account information, insufficient funds, a closed account, a debit block, an unauthorized debit, or other receiving-bank rules.
If an ACH payment is returned, review the return reason or ACH return code in the payment details when available. Then correct the issue before sending again. If the recipient’s bank blocked the payment, the recipient may need to contact their bank or provide updated account details.
- Confirm the account and routing number.
- Check whether the account can receive ACH credits or allow ACH debits.
- Make sure the recipient has enough funds if you’re pulling money by ACH debit.
- Ask the receiving bank whether a debit block, filter, or account restriction caused the return.
Wire payment failures
Wire transfers can fail or be delayed because of incorrect routing details, incorrect beneficiary information, missing addresses, insufficient funds, cutoff times, intermediary-bank issues, or additional review. International wires can also fail if the destination country, currency, bank, or beneficiary information isn’t supported.
Before resending a wire, compare the recipient’s instructions against the details entered in Slash. For international wires, confirm the SWIFT/BIC, beneficiary name, beneficiary address, bank address, account number or IBAN, and any required intermediary bank details.
Real-time payment failures
RTP and FedNow payments can fail if the recipient’s bank doesn’t participate in the network, the account can’t receive real-time payments, the payment exceeds limits, or the recipient details don’t pass network checks.
Real-time payments are generally irrevocable once sent, so review the recipient and amount carefully before confirming. If a real-time payment can’t be completed, try another payment method such as ACH or wire, if available.
International payment failures
International payments can involve multiple banks and local clearing systems, so they may fail or be delayed for reasons that don’t apply to domestic payments. Common causes include unsupported countries, unsupported currencies, missing beneficiary information, incorrect SWIFT or IBAN details, intermediary bank issues, and compliance review.
If an international payment fails, ask the recipient for updated payment instructions and confirm whether they need a wire, global ACH/local transfer, or another supported method. Returned international payments may take longer to come back because intermediary banks may need to process the return.
Crypto transfer issues
Supported crypto transfers can fail or be delayed if the wallet address is invalid, the wrong network is selected, the asset isn’t supported, the transfer is still confirming on-chain, or the transaction needs additional review. Always confirm the asset, network, and wallet address before sending.
Blockchain transfers usually can’t be reversed once broadcast to the network. If a transfer is pending, you can use the transaction hash and a block explorer to check its status when available.
What to do after a payment fails
- Open the payment details and read any failure message, return code, or notification.
- Verify the recipient’s payment details directly with the recipient.
- Check your available balance, limits, approval requirements, and payment method eligibility.
- Update the recipient or vendor record if the saved details are wrong.
- Resend the payment only after you’ve corrected the issue.
- If you’re not sure what caused the failure, contact Slash Support before trying again.
How to avoid future payment failures
- Verify new recipient or vendor details before sending money.
- Use the right payment method for the recipient and destination.
- Check balances and transfer limits before sending large payments.
- Keep vendor and recipient records up to date.
- Build in extra time for ACH, wires, international payments, holidays, and review windows.
- Be cautious with urgent payment requests or last-minute bank-detail changes.
When to contact Slash Support
Contact Slash Support through the in-app chat in your Slash dashboard if:
- A recipient says they didn’t receive a payment that shows as completed.
- You believe a payment was sent to the wrong recipient or destination.
- You corrected the issue but the payment still won’t go through.
When you contact support, include the payment amount, recipient name, payment method, date sent, failure message or return code, and any supporting documents or screenshots.
