SoFi Bank Routing Number: From Student Loans to Bank Charter
SoFi Bank
The student loan company that wanted to be a bank
SoFi launched in 2011 refinancing student loans by connecting borrowers with alumni investors from the same university. It quickly expanded into personal loans, mortgages, investing, and a cash management account called SoFi Money. But through all of that growth, SoFi wasn't actually a bank. It originated loans through partner banks and held deposits at third-party institutions. The routing number on a SoFi Money account belonged to someone else's charter.
That changed in January 2022 when SoFi acquired Golden Pacific Bancorp, a small community bank in Sacramento. The deal wasn't about Golden Pacific's branches or customers — it was about the charter. SoFi absorbed the banking license, rebranded the entity as SoFi Bank, N.A., and gained the ability to hold deposits and originate loans directly.
How the charter changed things
Before the acquisition, SoFi Money accounts carried the routing number of partner bank The Bancorp Bank: 031101279. After SoFi became a chartered bank, all SoFi Checking and Savings accounts migrated to SoFi Bank, N.A. with a new routing number: 121140399. The 121 prefix ties to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, reflecting SoFi Bank's California headquarters.
The transition wasn't entirely seamless. Customers who had set up direct deposits, automatic payments, or linked external accounts using the old Bancorp routing number had to update their information — a tangible reminder that behind every fintech product, there's a banking charter doing the actual work.
What the charter means for customers
Holding its own charter lets SoFi earn the net interest margin on deposits directly — the spread between what it pays depositors and what it earns lending those deposits out. That margin is why SoFi has been able to offer consistently high APY on savings accounts while building a profitable lending business alongside it.
Accounts are FDIC-insured directly through SoFi Bank, N.A. up to $250,000 per depositor. Combined with SoFi's partnerships with other banks for extended coverage, members can protect up to $2 million in deposits through the SoFi ecosystem.
Finding your routing number
In the SoFi app, tap your Checking and Savings account and select "Account Details" to see routing number 121140399 alongside your account number. The same information is available through SoFi's website under account settings. SoFi doesn't issue paper checks by default, but members can order checkbooks through the app — the routing number prints in the standard bottom-left position.
From fintech to full bank
SoFi's path from loan marketplace to chartered bank reflects a broader industry reality: the best fintech products eventually need real banking infrastructure to deliver on their promises. Slash built its business banking platform on the same principle — direct access to ACH, wire transfers, and card issuing without partner bank middleware. Faster settlement, clearer account details, and fewer surprises when your finance team needs to move money.
