An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Code R22 means the Individual Identification Number provided in the ACH entry is not valid. The Individual Identification Number is used by the originator to identify the receiver or account holder. This return may have occurred because:

  • The identification number was entered incorrectly. A typo, missing character, or formatting issue caused the identifier to fail validation.
  • The identification number does not match the receiver's records. The RDFI determined that the identifier provided does not correspond to the individual associated with the account.
  • An outdated or reused identification number was submitted. The identifier may no longer be valid due to changes in the receiver's information or internal records.
