What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R85

Code R85 means the outbound international payment was coded with the wrong SEC code or contains errors that make it unsuitable for international processing. This return indicates that the transaction should not have been submitted as an IAT or was improperly formatted for cross-border processing. This may have occurred because:

  • The transaction is actually domestic, not international. The payment may involve U.S.-based parties only and should have used a standard domestic SEC code instead of the IAT format.
  • The wrong IAT SEC code was used for the payment type. Different types of IAT transactions require specific SEC codes, and an inappropriate code may have been selected for this payment.
  • System or template errors caused incorrect IAT coding. Payment processing software may have automatically selected IAT formatting when it wasn't appropriate for this particular transaction.

How to resolve this return code

Follow these steps to address and prevent this ACH return.

1

Determine whether the payment is truly international.

Review the transaction to confirm whether it actually involves a cross-border component requiring IAT processing or if it's domestic.

2

Select the appropriate SEC code.

If international, verify you're using the correct IAT SEC code; if domestic, use the proper domestic code such as PPD, CCD, or WEB.

3
