What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R84

Code R84 means the IAT entry was not processed by the ACH gateway operator. This return indicates that the entry didn't successfully pass through the gateway that facilitates international ACH transactions between the U.S. and foreign financial systems. This may have occurred because:

  • The gateway rejected the entry due to technical issues. System errors, connectivity problems, or data transmission failures at the gateway operator may have prevented processing.
  • The entry didn't meet gateway processing requirements. Gateway operators have specific validation rules and the entry may have failed these checks before reaching the foreign banking system.
  • Gateway operations were suspended or unavailable. Scheduled maintenance, outages, or operational disruptions at the gateway may have prevented transaction processing during the submission window.
