What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R80

Code R80 means the International ACH Transaction (IAT) entry contains one or more coding errors. This return indicates that required fields in the IAT entry are missing, improperly formatted, or contain invalid data that prevents proper processing. This may have occurred because:

  • Required IAT-specific fields are missing or incomplete. IAT entries require additional information beyond standard ACH entries, such as foreign exchange reference, originator/receiver addresses, and purpose codes.
  • Field formatting doesn't comply with IAT specifications. Data may be in the wrong format, exceed character limits, or use invalid codes according to IAT entry requirements.
  • System or template errors generated incorrect IAT coding. Payment processing software or file creation tools may have populated IAT fields incorrectly or used outdated coding standards.
