What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R74

Code R74 means the RDFI is sending a corrected version of a previously sent return. This return indicates that an earlier return contained errors or inaccuracies that required correction, and this new return replaces the original. This may have occurred because:

  • The original return had incorrect data or coding. Fields such as the return reason code, amount, or account information may have been wrong in the first return submission.
  • The RDFI discovered an error after sending the initial return. Upon review or notification, the receiving bank identified mistakes that needed to be corrected with a replacement return.
  • System or processing issues caused the original return to be malformed. Technical errors during return creation required the RDFI to generate a properly formatted replacement return.
