What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R50

Code R50 means the ACH entry was returned due to state law restrictions affecting RCK entries. RCK (Re-Presented Check Entry) allows electronic re-deposit of a bounced check—specifically, one that was returned due to non-sufficient funds. This return may have occurred because:

  • The receiving bank is located in a state that does not permit RCK entries. Some states have not adopted the relevant provisions of state law required to allow check re-presentment via ACH.
  • The bank's customer agreements do not allow RCK transactions. Even if state law permits RCK entries, the financial institution may not have updated its customer agreements to support them.

How to resolve this return code

Follow these steps to address and prevent this ACH return.

1

Do not retry as an RCK entry.

The receiving bank or state law does not support re-presented check entries.

2

Identify an alternative payment method.

Work with the receiver to use a standard ACH debit with a different SEC code or another non-ACH payment option.

3

Consult your payment provider if needed.

If check re-presentment is required, determine whether RCK entries are supported for the receiver's bank and location before attempting another transaction.
