Understanding the true cost of a financial platform means looking beyond the price plan on the website. Airwallex advertises a free business account, but their fees across FX rates, card issuance, payment processing, and international transfers can add up depending on how your business uses the platform. This guide breaks down every Airwallex fee so you can evaluate whether the pricing works for your business.
Airwallex Subscription Plans
Airwallex has three subscription tiers that scale with business size and transaction volume. All include global accounts with local bank details in currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, and HKD. Explore is free at $0 per month in the US, with no minimum balance or deposit requirement. It includes the core account, transfers, and cards, making it a reasonable starting point for businesses mainly needing a multi-currency account. It lacks approval workflows and expense automation, so it tends to work until more employees begin spending. Onboarding usually takes a few business days with document verification. Grow costs $12 per user per month plus a platform fee tied to team size. It adds multi-conditional approval workflows, advanced expense automation, and accounting integrations including NetSuite and QuickBooks. Because pricing is per-user, costs rise with headcount: a twenty-person team pays roughly twice what a ten-person team does for the same features. Accelerate uses custom pricing for larger businesses and adds purchase order management, three-way invoice matching, and a dedicated account manager to everything in Grow.
FX Rates and Currency Conversion
Airwallex charges 0.50% above the interbank rate on eleven major currencies: USD, GBP, CAD, SGD, CHF, HKD, CNY, AUD, EUR, NZD, and JPY. All others carry a 1.00% margin. The 0.50% rate compares well with traditional banks, which often charge 1.5% to 3%. The 1.00% rate matters for businesses paying contractors or suppliers in emerging markets: converting $50,000 monthly costs $500 a month, or $6,000 a year. Payment acceptance has a separate FX schedule. A 0.50% foreign-currency settlement fee and 1.00% conversion fee can apply to customer payments. These are separate from transfer margins, so businesses that send and receive internationally may deal with both.
Payment Processing Fees
Airwallex also operates as an ecommerce payment gateway. Domestic card acceptance costs 2.80%, plus a $0.30 gateway fee per transaction. American Express category surcharges raise that to 3.10% for restaurants and bars, and 3.30% for travel and lodging. International cards cost a hefty 4.30% plus $0.30 per transaction. The gateway supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
Transfer and SWIFT Fees
SWIFT transfers cost $15 with shared charges or $25 when the sender covers all fees. However, Airwallex connects to local clearing systems in 120 countries, bypassing SWIFT in many cases. These transfers have historically been free, which means they’re often superior to international wire. Starting on October 12, 2026, Airwallex’s current fee schedule will add $1 to $7 charges for international transfers through local networks for Explore customers. Grow and Accelerate customers are exempt.
Corporate Cards and Cashback
Airwallex issues Visa debit cards in the US through Community Federal Savings Bank. Cards have no annual fee, are free to create, and have no international transaction fee when employees spend abroad. Technically, Airwallex offers 2% cash back on card spend, but this comes with a few caveats. For one, per their terms, this offer only applies to a promotion period that ends on December 31st, 2027. It’s unclear whether the offer will be renewed or modified after that date. That cash back offer also only applies to transactions above $100, which means a lot of everyday expenditures won’t earn that cash back at all. It also excludes in-person transactions of any kind, further limiting its earning potential. The average business will pay a lot of opportunity cost on transactions that aren’t covered by Airwallex’s cash back rules, but are covered by Slash’s cash back rules.
How Slash Pricing Compares
Slash charges $0 per month on its free plan with no minimum balance requirement and $25 per month for Pro. Pro includes free same-day ACH and domestic wires. On the free plan, same-day ACH costs $1 and domestic wires $6. International wires cost $25 on both plans, and the cross-border fee is 1% with a $0.40 minimum. Slash also charges a 2% foreign exchange fee for transactions made in a currency other than USD. The two big differences between Slash and Airwallex are in their paid plans and their card cash back. Some of Airwallex’s key features are locked behind their priced plans, which cost $12+ per user per month. With several users, that can add up quickly. Slash doesn’t lock any of its actual tools behind its Pro Plan, and any number of users can participate in the plan without an increase in cost. You’ll also be paying more for card transactions that don’t earn cash back. If you buy anything in-person with an Airwallex card, or if your purchase doesn’t exceed $100, you won’t earn a dime. With the Slash Visa® Platinum Card, you can earn up to 2% cash back on nearly all the purchases that Airwallex can’t.
Which Platform Costs Less?
That largely depends on where you operate. Airwallex can cost less for global businesses focused on currency conversion and payment acceptance. Its 0.50% margin on major pairs is competitive, local transfers reach 120-plus countries, and its gateway serves ecommerce businesses accepting cards globally. Slash costs less for businesses with meaningful card spend, domestic banking needs, or instant-settlement requirements. A company spending $150,000 a year on cards can earn up to $3,000 back through a standing program rather than a campaign with an expiration date. For US-based businesses seeking FDIC-insured deposits through a partner bank, card cashback, real-time payment rails, and yield on idle cash, Slash can cover more ground.
