What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R75

Code R75 means the RDFI is asserting that a return is not a duplicate, contrary to a claim made by the ODFI. This return code is used when the originating bank previously rejected a return as being a duplicate (R73 dispute context), but the RDFI maintains that the return is unique and valid. This may have occurred because:

  • The returns relate to different transactions. The RDFI may have sent returns for separate ACH entries that appear similar but are actually distinct transactions.
  • The ODFI incorrectly identified the return as a duplicate. Matching errors or incomplete review processes at the originating bank may have led to a false duplicate determination.
  • The RDFI has documentation showing the return is unique. The receiving bank can provide evidence that this return entry has not been previously submitted and should be processed.

2

Clarify the return's uniqueness.

Work with the receiving bank to review transaction identifiers, dates, and amounts to confirm whether the return is indeed unique.
