What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R73

Code R73 means the ODFI is acknowledging that the original return was sent within the proper time frame. This return code is used when an RDFI previously sent an R72 (Untimely Dishonored Return), but the ODFI disputes that claim and asserts the return was actually timely. This may have occurred because:

  • The ODFI disagrees with the RDFI's time frame calculation. There may be a dispute about the proper counting of banking days or the applicable deadline for the return.
  • The original return was sent on time but flagged incorrectly. Processing or timestamp errors may have made a timely return appear late to the RDFI.
  • Documentation supports the ODFI's position on timeliness. The originating bank has records showing the return was submitted within Nacha's required time frame.
