What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R71

Code R71 means a dishonored return was sent to the wrong financial institution. This return indicates that the RDFI sent a return entry to an incorrect ODFI, requiring the return to be rerouted to the proper destination. This may have occurred because:

  • The return was misdirected during routing. The receiving bank may have used incorrect routing information when sending the dishonored return, causing it to arrive at the wrong originating bank.
  • A processing or system error routed the return incorrectly. Technical issues or data mapping problems can cause the return to be sent to an unintended financial institution.
  • The original transaction routing information was incomplete or inaccurate. If the original entry had routing issues, the return may have been sent based on that flawed information.
