What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. These codes help banks, payment processors, and originators understand what went wrong during an ACH transaction so they can determine the appropriate next steps, such as retrying the payment, correcting information, or contacting the customer.

Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R63

Code R63 means the dollar amount in the return entry doesn’t match the dollar amount of the original entry. This indicates there was an amount mismatch created during the return process, not necessarily an issue with the original payment itself. This return may have occurred because:

  • The return entry was created with the wrong amount. The RDFI may have keyed or populated a different dollar amount than the original transaction amount.
  • A formatting or system issue altered the amount on the return. A processing or translation error can cause the amount in the return record to differ from the original entry.
  • The return was generated for the correct item but referenced the incorrect amount. The return must match the original entry amount exactly, and any mismatch triggers R63.
