What is an ACH Return Code?

An ACH return code is a standardized code used to explain why an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transaction was returned by the receiving bank.

Codes are issued by the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and maintained by Nacha, the organization that governs the ACH Network. Certain codes may apply to consumer accounts, non-consumer (business) accounts, or both. Why you're seeing ACH Return Code R14

Code R14 means the account's representative payee is no longer able to manage the account. A representative payee is an individual or organization authorized to receive and manage payments on behalf of another person, known as the beneficiary, who is the person entitled to the funds. This return may have occurred because:

  • The representative payee is no longer authorized to act on behalf of the beneficiary. Authorization may have been revoked due to legal changes, reassignment, or a court or agency decision.
  • The representative payee is deceased.
  • The bank has been notified of a change in payee status.

Note: This return applies when the representative payee is affected, not the beneficiary.

  6. Once all information is confirmed, click Send Payment.
